Sessile OakQuercus petrae |
This noble deciduous tree is a native tree and is our national tree, well established in Ireland over 9,000 years ago. It is distinguished from the common oak by its rather longer, long stalked leaves, which are usually pubescent beneath and also in its sessile fruits. The sessile oak is a finer tree than the common oak in growth, form and foliage. The sessile oak is the one to plant for landscaping, groups and specimens. The oak provides a huge positive impact on the environment sustaining the largest range of insect life, which ultimately helps to sustain other forms of habitation. Plants have adapted to life under the canopy and much flora can flourish sometimes completing their lifecycle before the oak comes into full foliage. Quercus petrae can grow to a height of 100 feet and a width of 35 to 40 feet. This is one of the top trees when choosing trees for the development of natural habitats. |
