Magnolia Tree

Magnolia X soulangeeana

This is a hybrid cross between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia liliflora. It is a deciduous, spreading tree of about 30 feet high and can spread to an equal width.

It has dark green obviate leaves, which can be up to 8 inches long. Large goblet shaped flowers 3 to 6 inches across varying from deep rose pink, to violet purple or cream are borne in mid and late Spring, before and with the young leaves.

It will tolerate indifferent clay soils and atmospheric pollution, but is only moderately lime tolerant. It grows best in moist well-drained humus rich preferable acid to neutral soils in sun or partial shade. A perfect tree for the small gardens that so many people have today, with its character and beautiful flowers. It can also be grown in a mixed border with shrubs, grasses and herbaceous perennials.
