HornbeamCarpinus betulus fastigata |
This is a medium sized deciduous tree; it is of medium size erect and of pyramidal habit. Quite narrow as a young tree but broadening as it matures. It is usually seen growing as a clean stem of 2 metres and great distinction. The leaves have fine, sharp teeth and prominent parallel veins and are a light green. In autumn the leaves turn yellow and then orange brown. The tree can reach a height of 50 feet and a width of 40 feet. Hornbeam will grow well on heavy clay soils but can tolerate a wide range of soils. The tree is ideal for planting in gardens as it has architectural merit and is attractive throughout the year. It can be planted in borders with shrubs and perennials as it won’t cast heavy shade to take away excessive nutrients from around other plants. Carpinus betulsu fastigata is an ideal street tree again because of its neat habit and attractive foliage. The fact that the leaves are quite small also helps as they don’t cause too much problems blocking gullies and drains. The tree also makes an excellent hedging plant and will grown in soils where beech can sometimes struggle or fail. |
