Common Walnut

Juglans regia

This deciduous tree is a native of South-East Europe to China. It comes into leaf late in summer. The leaves alternate pinnate twenty to forty-five centimetres are dull dark yellow to green with yellowish veins. Crushed leaves have a scent similar to shoe polish.

It gowns best on a good deep well drained soil in full sun and with its twisted branches and attractive pale grey bark, it is a suitable tree for planting in public spaces that can accommodate a medium sized tree. It has a rounded spreading habit.

The Irish climate is not warm enough for the tree to produce fruit.
